Two Studies on Overcoming

Some questions open a conversation. Others set a trap. How do we respond when someone is listening for an opportunity to use our words against us?

In this Bible Chat, Tom Sims reflects on Luke 11:53–12:12. As religious leaders try to catch Jesus in his words, he prepares his disciples to face hostility with honesty, courage, and trust in God.

We explore Jesus’ warning about hypocrisy, his promise that hidden things will come to light, and his assurance that the God who remembers the sparrows has not forgotten us. We also consider the difficult saying about blasphemy against the Holy Spirit and the importance of remaining open to repentance and grace.

Jesus promises that the Holy Spirit will teach his followers what they ought to say when the hour comes. That promise invites us to prepare thoughtfully, listen humbly, and trust God in difficult conversations.

The accuser does not have the final word.

War in heaven? The image in Revelation 12:7–17 can seem strange until we listen for the hope it offers people living under pressure and persecution.

In this Bible Chat, we explore Michael’s battle with the dragon, the casting down of the accuser, and the victory God’s people share through the blood of the Lamb and the word of their testimony.

What does this mean when shame tells us we are worthless, suffering makes us feel abandoned, or condemnation seems louder than grace?

Christ’s victory gives us courage to receive forgiveness, face what needs to change, and remain faithful amid hardship. It also challenges us to resist lies, defend human dignity, and stand beside those who suffer.

We’ll consider the passage’s biblical background, insights from William Barclay, and its connection with Paul’s assurance in Romans 8.

For reflection:
• What accusing message am I carrying?
• How does the good news of Jesus answer it?
• How can I bear faithful witness this week?
